British retailer, Flagship Fones,  has began taking pre-orders for the Asus Padfone for a whopping £699.98. That's a $1,096.98! For that amount, you will get a very unique 3-in-1 hybrid transformer smartphone/tablet/netbook ensemble. The Asus Padfone is actually an Android Smartphone that you can insert into the PadFone Station which transforms the device into a fullgrown 10.1 inch tablet. If that's not enough, the tablet in it's turn, can be combined with the station dock transforming it into a "Asus Transformer-like" netbook. And to top off this extravaganza, the Asus Padfone comes with a stylus that not only let's you take notes like on a Samsung Galaxy Note or a HTC Flyer. It also doubles as a....  are you ready?...  A bluetooth headset!!!

The tablet speculated to be called the iPad 3/iPad 3 features a 9.7 inch high resolution Retina 2048 x 1536 display. This means it has a 264 ppi pixel density. It would be like looking at an analog picture when looking at the screen. Well maybe not, but you get my drift.

7 inch iPad mini

It's that time again, time for the 7 inch iPad mini rumors to surface again. This time the source of the rumor is Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil. Gottheil told Computerworld  that he expects Apple to release a 7 inch iPad later this year. This iPad mini will not be the iPad 3 that is expected to launch in March. Despite several comments of Steve Jobs dismissing the 7 inch iPad mini, rumors always resurface of a 7 inch iPad. According to Gottheil a 7 inch iPad mini has always been in the planning.

"Actually that's a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank."

LG put a video online of their new smartphone called the Optimus Vu. It has a 5 inch screen which puts this device in the phablet category (phone/tablet hybrid), just like the Galaxy Note or the Lenovo S2005. What you notice right away though, is the 4:3 aspect ratio the Optimus Vu has, which is quite uncommon. The phablet will come with Android 2.3 at introduction but is expected to get an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade later on.

The latest news we had on RIM was the announcement of Playbook OS 2.0 during CES. Now N4BB.com reports that RIM will release two new Playbooks this year. A 7 inch Playbook featuring 3G is scheduled to be released in April, and later on in December we can expect a 10 inch, LTE enabled Playbook. They also mention other interesting Blackberry news and N4BB's article ends with the following statement.

We hope the release of PlayBook OS 2.0 and continued market penetration of BlackBerry 7 devices will be enough to keep BlackBerry afloat until the end of 2012 as the wait for BlackBerry 10 will be so worth it.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime 3G

Update January 16th 2012:  Asus has stated that there will be no 3G version of the Asus Transformer Prime as reported earlier. This was confirmed by Asustek Taiwan as well as Asus Benelux. Asustek Taiwan stated that "no such product exists on its current roadmap,". Asus Benelux, as reported by Tablets Magazine gave a rather odd and obvious reply

"As for the Netherlands, there are no plans for a Transformer Prime 3G just yet, but technically it is possible to produce one."

In December Asus Germany confirmed that Asus won't release any 3G version Transformer Primes because of low demand for 3G tablets. . Today, however, Asus Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) revealed during the presentation of the Asus Transformer Prime, that within a few months we can expect 3G models to be released. The exact release date and price weren't mentioned.

Eric Schmidt didn't provide us with any details about the coming tablet, other than that it would be a tablet of the highest quality.  Now rumors have emerged that Google isn't going to compete with Apple, but that it will actually target Amazon's Kindle Fire.

What is Gorilla Glass?

Gorilla GlassMaybe you've browsed this site and came accross the term "Gorilla Glass" as one of the features in the specifications of a tablet and wonder what that's all about? Well, in 2008 Corning Incorporated launched a Scratch-resistant and durable type of glass and called it "Gorilla Glass". Very catchy phrase, makes you wanna google it right away. Since then, many smartphones and tablets (like the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Asus Transformer) have made use of this fortified glass. It is designed to be thin, light and damage-resistant, those are very welcome features on a tablet. I certainly see it as a plus, when it's featured on a tablet.
